Post Graduate Diploma In Clinical Laboratory Sciences (PGD-CLS). This course is intended to train biological science graduates in the fields of clinical chemistry, clinical pathology and clinical microbiology laboratory techniques with adequate theoretical knowledge and practical skills

Requirements

Eligibility criteria: B.Sc. and above (with any biological science subjects)

  • Introduction to Pathology and Medical

  • Technology Past present and future

  • Methods of blood collection (theory and Practical)

  • Anatomy of the vein

  • Notes and reading from text books

  • Different Anticoagulants and their use Lab Glassware

  • Quality Control/ QA/ Accreditation Instrumentation

  • Introduction

  • Erythropoiesis, Development of red cell from Birth Blast to mature cell

  • Leucopoiesis Development of WBC from birth

  • Blast to mature cells and platelet maturation

  • Blast to mature cell fragment

  • Hb formation builds it up from Succinyl CoeA And then break it down to Bilirubin. Function estimation both manual and automated: Ref ranges (RR).

  • WBC – Function molecular level phagocytes etc. RR of each cell Estimation.

  • PLT: Function molecular level and estimation, RR.

  • Indices: MCV, MCH, MCHC and significance in anemias.

  • Eosinophil Ct –Stain

  • Automation: Principles and must learn to read histograms and scatter plots

  • Hematological Dysfunction like Sickle, IM (Infectious Mononucleosis), SLE, MM (Multiple myeloma)

  • Anemias Leukemia’s: Acute/Chronic, FAB Classification, Case histories Coagulation Theory and Practical

  • Clotting Factors, Extrinsic and intrinsic clotting Cascades, build up to clot break down with Action of Plasminogen, G6PD/Sickle cell , Hb electrophoresis

  • Chemistry of Carbohydrates in detail with Specific reference to Glucose and Diabetes, Insulin &HbA1C

  • Proteins with specific reference to all total Proteins Albumin/Globulin and Electrophoresis

  • Lipids: with ref to Cholesterol, HDL/LDL, Triglyceride, FFA, Lipoprotein

  • Kidney function tests with ref to Chemistry of Urea, Uric Acid (UAC), Creatinine and their significance

  • Liver function tests with ref to ALT, AST, and Alkaline Phosphatase, Bilirubin, GGTP

  • Heart function tests with ref to CPK, SGOT, LDH, Troponins, Myoglobin, NT-Pro-BNP etc

  • Pancreatic function tests Amylase, Lipase, Sweat electrolytes, Blood gases and Electrolytes

  • Electrophoresis, Chromatography

  • Study of Hormones

  • Physiology of Urine Formation with the anatomy of the Kidney

  • Physiochemical aspects of urine and Significance from volume to pH to sugar, Acetone, protein etc.

  • Cellular elements of urine and their Significance viz pus cells, casts, etc.

  • Parasitology-Life Cycle of parasites, Nematodes – full, Trematodes – full, Cestodes – full Ovas and cysts larvas, mouth, Parts/strobila in stool their structures, Blood parasites like Malaria, Leishmania etc.

  • Theory and Practical: VDRL, Widal, R.A. Latex, Pregnancy test Mono and HCGB, C- Reactive proteins, Anti-streptolysin O Titers, HBsAg, ELISA, TORCH, HIV, etc..

  • PCR, Infective Markers

  • Different ABO blood groups and Rh Factors, genetics of inheritance difference Of groups of ABO, the different Rh Antigens and their significance

  • Use of Coombs, Albumin & Enzymes, Cross matching, incomplete antibodies their detection

  • Hemolytic disease of the Newborn, Rhogam

  • Apheresis

  • Importance of different blood components

  • Gram positive cocci and bacilli of Pathological interest with Biochemical Characters and AST

  • Gram negative cocci and bacilli of pathological interest with Biochemical characters and AST

  • Different cultures are given, their processing and staining.

  • Body Fluids-Semen Examination and other body fluids Physical, chemical and Microscopic details

  • Extra and Advance lectures- 30 lectures in English of one hour each covering, Comprehension, letter writing, and reading essays with exam

  • Extra and Advance lectures- Maths will have 30 one hour lectures covering Statistics, basic and advanced needed in laboratories, and a small project with exam

  • Hematology-Reading abnormal smears viz anemia, leukemia

  • Hematology-How to read Histograms and Scatter plots

  • Biochemistry And Chemistry-ABGs and Electrolytes, and Automation

  • Microbiology-QC in Micro and Advance Microscopy , Virology

  • Endocrinology -Disease based hormones

  • Immunology- Vitamin D/Bone markers/ Cancer markers/ ECLIA/ ELISA/ PCR techniques

  • QC/QA/EQAS-Statistics with accreditation procedures – NABL/CAP

  • This course is designed for students desiring a career as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in the rapidly growing stand-alone and hospital-based diagnostic laboratories. This course is also suitable for those desiring a career in the IVD / medical devices industry. 

    Upon the completion of the course, students will be able to:
